(DY12)

More negative and brutal thrash from Epileptic Terror Attack. Thirteen blistering spastic thrashers about skateboarding, hating the world, and not giving a fuck. They do a Circle Jerks cover and they love early '80s hardcore. Recorded during the same session as the songs on their split with Tear It Up. Ex-members of DS-13.

If you haven't been acquainted with the fact that the citizens of Sweden rock harder per capita than any nation in the world now is as good a time as any to get your bloated head out of your behind. After seeing the band live and hearing most of their recorded material I can assure you that it's quite safe to add Epileptic Terror Attack to the list of great Swedish bands alongside DS 13 (with whom ETA share a member), the Refused, At the Gates, SkitSystem and whoever else is on your own personal list.

While ETA's beginnings were more in the traditional Swedish hardcore style (think the aforementioned SkitSystem, Discharge or most any other band whose name starts with the prefix "D! is") somewhere along the line they morphed into one of the most authentic-sounding bands attempting to do the early 80s hardcore style. While all but a few of those bands get bogged down with modern production standards and the third-hand influence of Youth of Today et al ETA get it exactly right.

What does right entail? Well, none other than the reconciliation of each of the following sonic characteristics: hyper-fast beats, tons of musical variation, instant hum-ability, and lots of lyrics about skateboarding (okay, the last one isn't a necessity but it's certainly a plus!). ETA have the total package I assure you, and no aspect is skimped on. Hell, if I didn't know any better I'd file this disc away with all my early Dischord records!!!

Just listen to "Killed By Skateboarding," whose chorus crackles like the best of the best hardcore anthems (think "In My Eyes," "Ready To Fight," "Young 'Til I Die"), or "No Faith" a classic hardcore tune that disintegrates ! into a four-minute guitar destruction manual. If you dig the core there's probably something here for you, and more likely there's a lot of it.

I'm surprised that I haven't gotten any letters of complaint for endorsing so damn many hardcore records lately but in my opinion the scene is healthier than it's been since the early 80s. Right now it would be quite easy to walk into a well-stocked record store and drop $50 or more a week and not be disappointed with a single selection (as long as you're following my expert advice, that is!), and while I doubt that anyone reading this has a budget like that it's a great feeling to know that when you get to the record store that there are records this amazing waiting there for you.

Epileptic Terror Attack's second album (they also have a recent split LP with TEAR IT UP) and no disappointment yet. Hard-hitting and catchy with an old-school influence but not sounding dated to these ears. The title track offers a change of pace, with a pounding mid-tempo rhythm and some damaged guitar chords, stretching out to over four minutes without losing momentum-OK, maybe it's a bit excessive but what's wrong with a little deviation from formula? Hard-skating, anti-social, pissed off Swedes. What more could you ask for?

Hell yes! Umea, Sweden's E.T.A. have a brilliant LP out on Deranged Records from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This hardcore skate-fest has the fukking in-your-face shouted vocals and great guita you might associate with some early eighties hardcore punk from DC or Southern California. The title cut , "no faith" slows the hectic pace down a notch and might remind some punks of the Minor Threat song "out of step". The seven songs on side B are from various compilations, including "Sin and Satan", "Ripped to Pieces", and a Circle Jerks cover, "Beverly Hills" all of which appeared on the Thrashin Records comp. This record is great! Go get it! MRR #223
