MRR#247
OUR WAR play straight edge hardcore (played by punks, not boy scouts) that falls somewhere between YOUTH OF TODAY and NEGATIVE APPROACH. No bullshit attitude and fucking solid hardcore songs. The vocals are awesome and perfect breakdowns. If you are way into old school and/or straight edge hardcore, you will love this, I would think. From what I can tell, this is a pressing of their demo. They didn't do much as far as art, just your basic photo of some army dudes, photocopied. The lyrics are perfect for this kind of thing, not really straying far from the scene and shit like that. The record holds up, no problem.

Aversion Online
Obviously this is the demo from this raging Canadian hardcore band pressed into vinyl. They play heavy old school hardcore without venturing into metal territory, somewhat like early Sick of it All or Judge with higher-pitched vocal shouts and more of a bitter, sarcastic, pissed off sense of attitude. There's a good mix of tempos, never too fast, never too slow, and despite a lack of variety it doesn't even matter, because they never let up and they're good at what they do. The recordings's not bad for a demo at all. The drums are natural, the bass tone is huge and plays and plays dead even alongside the guitar, the vocals are searing and rest right in with the music nice. Of course it's on the raw side, but it sounds great for what it is, and I'd kill for a bass presence like this to exist on most hardcore records. The 7" comes in a simple one-sided xeroxed sleeve that only folds over about 1/3 of the way on the back. The record has blank white labels with the band name handwritten on them, and a tiny one-sided insert is inside with some band photos and the lyrics. And the lyrics kick ass, by the way. "You can't teach old dogs new tricks, Throw out slogans see what sticks, The real world eats you alive, It takes more than patches to survive." Nothing fancy, just the guts, and this thing's limited to 500 copies. If you want one, I recommend acting now rather than later.

Push the Limits
Toronto's straight edge grandpops on rampage! This is Jeff Beckman on guitar again (he played in CHOKEHOLD and LEFT FOR DEAD), accompanied by 4 more old, bitter guys fed up with modern hardcore, and boy does it show. Tough old styled hardcore with angry lyrics, this shit rocks. A record like this will keep you into hardcore for another decade, and not just because youÕre afraid of these guys pounding you.
