Career Suicide
CAREER SUICIDE
sars 7"
(DY47)

The 'sars' 7", their 2nd 7". After a bleak spring in quarantine, these guys decided to pick up their gear and get some new tracks on wax, and the result is nothing short of greatness. Yet another great local band making their mark in Canadian punk history. 4 new tracks of snotty pissed hardcore punk. They have been rightfully compared to Boston's FU's, Angry Samoans, and early Dischord titles. Features Jonah from FUCKED UP on the guitar.

MRR - Allan Mcnaughton Top 10 of 2003
Blasting out of Canada, this band had one 7" out already, on Kangaroo Records but this one brought them to my attention in a big way. Their album didn't have quite the same impact, but this 7" kills.

Short, Fast, and Loud
Toronto's finest return with their second EP. Side one is taken up by Quarantine, a touching and sympathetic ode to their city's recent plight with a disease that was apparently incredibly contagious, yet miraculously didn't spread out of the city confines. Quarantine shows Career Suicide aren't just a bunch of ADHD afflicted hardcore kids and is a great, memorable song. The main verse sounds to me like it could've come straight off the first Rudimentary Peni EP then it flits back and forth to influences like early Reagan Youth, Jealous Again era Black Flag and even The Dickies. Side two has three faster songs that have a healthy FUs influence.

Having listed a bunch of bands this reminds me of, it would suck if you went away thinking it sounds like a composite of the above mentioned. This isn't mere parroting of former classics, but a much more cohesive listen, put together by kids who really know their shit and what they're trying to sound like, Career Suicide didn't just sling together three barely tuned chords and say "there, that sounds 80s."

The other incredible thing about this ep is that despite what the cover says, for this recording the band were only a two piece, with one guy playing all the instruments, and honestly, he plays them all pretty fucking well it has to be said.

Another contribution from the rather excellent Toronto punk scene, this brought to you once again by the fine folks at Deranged Records. Career Suicide crank out four killer romps of ANGRY SAMOANS styled snot-rocket to the face punk. The A-side rips out a mid-paced tribute to those inflicted with the horrifying SARS virus, while the B-side rips through 3 tracks of thrashy trashy hardcore. GREAT, great, Great!

MRR #246
Toronto's Career Suicide's second ep combines the thick, fast punk charge of Christ on a Crutch with a wry, sarcastic edge that's shown to best advantage on "quarantined", a response to the paranoia around the SARS epidemic. But the remaining three tracks on the flip are equally powerful and even faster, with clear, no-nonsense production, rounding out a very strong EP. Recommended.
