AUGUST UPDATE
PRE-ORDERS – Vinyl for BURIAL 12” and VICIOUS CYCLE LPs should be arriving to me this week which means that I should be able to finally mail out all preorders by mid August. Both bands had copies in time for their tours but there were some delays at the pressing plant due to the centre labels being accidently being dropped in a liquid solution and needed to be reprinted.
Two new items have been added for pre-order – the excellent SEDATIVES debut LP and the crushing NOMOS 7”, which should arrive in mid August, along with the BURIAL 12” and VICIOUS CYCLE LP. If you already have a pending order with me and would like to add some items to your order and save on shipping, email me and let me know what you have already ordered and what you would like to add and I’ll get a total on the additional items.
I also added a few new distro titles such new MARVELOUS DARLINGS 7” from Austria but more importantly I added a few shipping bundle options to reduce the shipping cost for those ordering multiple items. Combine your order with a friend or add a couple records to your order and save some cash in the process.

NOMOS – Demo 7″ from NYC hardcore band NOMOS, originally issued as a run of 100 cassettes, now seeing a release on vinyl. Six songs in under nine minutes. Influenced equally by early 80’s rippers like Poison Idea, Void, and Antidote and early 90’s hardcore such as Citizen’s Arrest, No Comment, and Infest. Recorded by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios and featuring artwork and layout by Vincent Smith. MRR’s review of the demo: “The first song on this demo, including its intro and how it sets things up for the rest of the song, is possibly one of the most perfectly written/executed hardcore songs I have ever heard. From the opening chord ringing out “Stand Up” style to the sarcastic-sounding ride cymbal hits near the end of the intro…fuck, I could go on and I won’t, but this song deserves its own review. As for the rest, they’re a bit different and not quite as captivating, but still damn good on their own, bringing to mind CITIZEN’S ARREST and
post-Disassembly Line CAPITALIST CASUALTIES both via the present in terms of songwriting, with abrasive shouted vocals, a scuzzy bass tone, a thick guitar sound, and everything recorded in the red for the perfect distorted grate. Please do a 7″, if not an LP.” Color vinyl is selling quickly so hurry up. Do yourself a favor and listen to a few tracks here http://www.myspace.com/nomosnyc

SEDATIVES – Debut album from Ottawa’s SEDATIVES is now available for pre-order. After a very well received debut 7” (see reviews below), the SEDATIVES deliver a monster album. Featuring members of Buried Inside, Last Communion, White Wires, and the Million Dollar Marxists, the SEDATIVES do it dark, desperate, and minimal. An archaic sound from the gothic ages of punk…when punk was catchy, but also dangerous. Going back to the three chord song, with downstrokes, vicious energy, and the two minute deadline. Sacred by the organ, it’s night church in the post apocalyptic wasteland. Listen to tracks from the album http://www.myspace.com/sedativesedatives
RAZORCAKE It’s strange to not be able to think of the last band I’ve listened to that took such a liking to “New Rose”-era Damned and the first track, “Cannot Calm Down,” starts off with an unwinding church organ until the drums gallop in and the guitars slide into their dark places. I’ve always enjoyed the charred-remains, desolation-at-dusk feel of the Damned and the Sedatives nail that feeling and atmosphere. When they speed up the tempo, the references jump forward in time to the cretin cheering of the Spits and the tense, creased power pop of fellow Canadians, Statues. A nice, unexpected surprise.
review’d by TERMINAL BOREDOM Punk rock from Canada’s capital city, where there seems to be a bit of rock activity as of late. They need the excitement, because the Sens fucking blow. This reminds me of post-’Black Album’ Damned a little bit, lots of organ grinding married to faster and darker tempos and some hidden goth moves. Very emotive and anthemic, a little bit poppy, some would call this Wipers-influenced as well, but only in its down-n-out vibe. Sounds Canadian to me somewhow, like a less annoying and punkier Tranzmitors or Statues. Fans of The Estranged and their ilk would do well with this. Scum stats: 300 copies with hand-colored sleeves, being repressed by P.Trash as we speak so someone is digging it. Point given for Debbie Harry tribute sleeve.(RK)

GUILTY FACES – Their debut album has been added to the preorder section of the online store and is available in limited edition colored vinyl. You can thru derangedrecords.com and it is also available on itunes and emusic. After a well-received 7”, a lineup change, countless wasted nights, girl problems, spilled beers, cheap highs and the occasional tour, Guilty Faces return with their debut LP “Domestic Bliss”. A mix of early 80’s hardcore punk with the driving force of the Adolescents, Circle Jerks, as well as the fervent melody of bands like The Replacements, Husker Du, and The Wipers, the band offers up ten songs about the joys of ruining yourself/life and the perils that follow. Snotty and poignant lyrics, hard and tuneful riffs and a great recording from Ryan Abbott (Social Circkle/Side Two Studios) make this LP a definite must for fans of hardcore punk and depraved personalities of all sorts. Two tracks from the album are available www.myspace.com/derangedrecords
BURIAL – The return of Germany’s BURIAL with 6 new tracks are burning spirit hardcore punk. Taking cues from Japan’s DEATHSIDE and CRUDE with unrelenting hardcore mixed with a good dose of high velocity metal riffing. Limited edition colored vinyl is available for thru derangedrecords.com. SMALLTOWN – SMALLTOWN are coming back to the USofA this fall. Here are some reviews from their IMPLOSION album:
Maximumrocknroll #315 Wow! Have these guys ever come a long way since their early days. Since their formation in Sweden back in 2000, SMALLTOWN has navigated through their street-punk/skinhead roots and become an incredibly talented pop band that reminds me of the JAM or on a number of tracks featuring organs, accordion, harmonica, and /or horns, they sometimes have a REDSKINS vibe! SMALLTOWN has matured musically and are now the real deal, complete with clap-tracks on some songs and witty and intelligent lyrics like on “Turn it around”: “Every day we hear the news of floods and hurricanes, of acid rain and the polar ice melting away / I can’t believe we allowed it to come this far / I just cannot understand how short-sighted we are…” Brilliant ! There is a need for more bands like this, who play with their heart and soul like SMALLTOWN does, SMALLTOWN might just be this generation’s BILLY BRAGG… If you like good music and give a damn, you will buy this record and really listen to it!
Exclaim.ca Once in awhile it’s refreshing to actually hear a punk rock band that are willing to go back to their roots and celebrate the diversity and range of the genre without having to rely on aggressiveness or vulgarity to get their point across. Sweden’s Smalltown not only pay respect to early mod-influenced punk but they immerse themselves in it by taking on a sound comparable to Stiff Little Fingers, the Jam and most notably, the Clash. Songs like “Back on Track,” “Richie” and “Quicksand” are equivalent to something off of the aforementioned pioneers’ Give ‘Em Enough Rope, complete with hand claps, dub-style organs and Mick Jones-flavoured guitar riffs. Implosion is as nostalgic as it is invigorating, putting a new spin on an expunged subgenre with its raw folk and reggae undertones unified with gritty, throaty vocals. Much like “the only band that matters,” Smalltown are a politically-aware blue collar punk band that write songs for the working class rebel and in today’s economic rut, their music couldn’t come at a better time.” (Deranged) (Brad Schmale)

Implosion? Not very likely. If anything, this Swedish trio should blow up all over the place with their infectious cuts that reference Stiff Little Fingers as much as The Clash. It’s folky and has touches of reggae at times but most of all, this is a prime example of a punk band going back to their roots and coming back with a sound that’s totally invigorating. The horns are not overused and the handclaps and dubby organ sounds aren’t tiresome. But what “Implosion” is, is totally addictive and catchy. Just give songs like “Rickie” or “Quicksand” a listen and feel free to agree with me. Way to go Smalltown! Score: 8 out of 10 (Thomas)
